Huntsville is home to the O.B. Ellis Unit E1. The O.B. Ellis Unit E1 is one of the few correctional institutions that composes the Complex.

The O.B. Ellis Unit E1 is licensed to have custody of 2500 inmates. Majority of these inmates are known as closed custody offenders.

The O.B. Ellis Unit E1 also has an incentive program in place. The incentive program is designed to help better the inmate behavior.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

You will need to keep in mind when sending a letter or a care package to an inmate in the O.B. Ellis Unit E1, that there are two different addresses. The first address is the physical address where the inmate is in the facility. The second address is the mailing address in which you would put on your care packages and letter envelopes. You can deposit money online, over the phone, and through the kiosk in the facility.

Phone calls

All calls are limited to 15-minutes. You will not be permitted to call the inmate. You will be required to wait for the inmate to call you. Please do not call the facility and expect them to leave the inmate a message.

All calls will be recorded for safety purposes.


Before you can even think about visiting an inmate in the O.B. Ellis Unit E1, you will need to print out, fill out the visitor’s application, and then submit it. Once you submit it, you will need to wait for it to be approved. Once you are approved, you can make your appointment by phoning 936-295-5756.

8:15 to 9:45 am

10:30 am to 12 pm

1 pm to 2:30 pm
